The Trial took us to the remote St Paul’s Monastery
(dating from the 5th century), populated by seemingly thousands of
(mainly Egyptian) tourists – a step back to reality after the luxury of
deserted Libyan ruins. The Navigator supplied a group of motor cyclists news of
garages in Libya

After the usual long wait at the border to enter Egypt
to check passport (5 times?) chassis and engine numbers (4 times) we eventually
got on our way to the next halt, a beach party organised by the Egyptian Car
Club. This was curtailed by the delays at the border, and the strong winds
whipping across the sands. Long enough despite this to have our first
experience of the hospitality of the Club members, and to enjoy their
predominantly 1970’s American classics.

Day Five ended at Gaddaffi’s birth place, Sirt. The hotel
overlooked the beach, and along with other competitors we enjoyed an encounter
with a young camel herder and his small herd of camels. We remembered with a
twinge of conscience the barbequed camel meat we had enjoyed the previous
evening!

The Driver and alternate navigator (Ros, better looking than the Peking Paris variety) signed up for another of Philip Young’s rallies, this time the Nile trial. It started at Marseille in the depths of winter ie January 24. This entailed leaving Portsmouth, enduring a freezing ferry crossing (the ship heating system wasn’t working) and a sub-zero drive the length of France. The stoicism exhibited by the alternate navigator did, I am glad to report, match that shown by the P-P navigator faced with Mongolian river crossings..

On entering the UK, I was asked by a passport official “Where have you come from?!“Peking”“Not far then!”.A last word from the organisers “we also rate David and Jonathan Spurling for taking a ratty Morgan when the organisers tried to turn them down, proving the organisers right when it broke, surviving three days stranded in the Gobi Desert, but riding into Paris on the same Colway remoulds they started out on – a true grit tankard well deserved”.Ratty Morgan indeed!.
