The Morgan is entered for the Classic Rally Association’s 22nd Classic Marathon in June This year the start is in Beaune and goes through the Pyrenees to finish at Biarritz. (for further details see www.classicrally.org.uk)
The driver is accompanied as co-pilote by Ros,
survivor of many other
rallies in more far flung regions. The faithful Morgan was given the
once over, and a few items proved to be in need of attention. The last
significant outing of the Morgan was to World Cup Rally event at Gaydon,
celebrating the 40th anniversary of the London Mexico rally.
The event well deserved the excellent attendance. Many renowned
rally drivers/navigators were present, as well as Jim Gavin, who was
heavily involved in the organisation of many of the rallies of the
period.
We also met up with Gerard Brown, the ace photographer
and provider of several of the photos used on this web site It was good
to see that had largely recovered from his injuries of the London
Casablanca rally. He was accompanied by his family and the younger
members enjoyed sitting in the Morgan. It was good to meet up with
Gerard again and meet his lovely family.
The Navigator, apart
from being good looking and good at navigation, is also observant, and
noticed a vibration from the front suspension. Subsequent investigation
showed that one of the wheels was seriously out of balance, and wear in
the king pins. This was hardly surprising in view of the amount of hard
driving done since the last replacement (including two rallies with many
desert stages). The downside of the sliding pillar suspension is that
the job entails dismantling the front suspension, pressing out the old
bushes, pressing in the new ones and then reaming them to fit the 1”
kingpin.
Successfully accomplished this merely left the
non-functioning speedometer and rev counter to be attended to. |
