A phone call and subsequent e-mail – could the Morgan be at Angouleme for a display and 3 parade laps between practice and racing at the Circuit de Ramparts meeting? Despite a clash with the Goodwood Revival meeting - an invitation which could not be turned down. The Peeks, Morgan and Gite owners relocated close to Cognac (www.cottagesandclassics.com) had been asked to arrange a display of 20 odd Morgans representing the marque on its centenary year.

The P-P Morgan presumably on account of its extensive, if not illustrious, rallying career was included, so the Driver and alternate Navigator(the good looking one, as opposed to the Peking-Paris variety) set off to catch the fast ferry to Caen at the ungodly hour of 0545. The benefit was the eminently civilised arrival time to reach our overnight stop near Chateaurault.
The Chateau de la Motte (www.chateau-de-la-motte.net) proved to be a magnificent choice.

The owners, Jean Marie and Marie Andre were wonderful hosts. Highlights of our visits (we could not resist staying there again on our return!) were a tour of Jean Marie’s herb garden, vegetables and  woodland – based as far as possible on 16 century varieties. Equally enjoyable were Marie Andre’s dinners, utilising many of the products of the gardens – including good sized portions of vegetables (yes – in a French hotel!!!) Equally good were the aperatifs and wines selected by Jean Marie from local vineyards. We were sad to leave such good company.

Angouleme proved to be a great event – largely due to all the efforts Lyn and Graham put in organising the display and parade. The atmosphere in the town, totally transformed for the one day into a spectacular town circuit, was memorable. Highlights included a race featuring 20 3-wheeled Morgans – mostly Darmont-Morgans produced under licence in Franceand the Formules de France race with a Martini Mk 59  which had to reverse each time at the virage de la cathedrale hairpin (!)

A torrential downpour put paid to the last race.
The Morgan parade was led by 3 very well driven 3 wheelers, followed by the P-P flat rad and a spread of more modern Morgans including  the amazing Aeromax coupe.

Regrettably  a couple failed to complete the trip to Angouleme amongst them Douglas Hallawell’s TR engined example which had apparently broken a rocker arm – hopefully without too much damage. The event concluded with a tour round Chateau Chesnel and its distillery.
A fantastic visit and thanks again the Peeks for the efficient organisation.
